Dude, Where's My Update? #1
Oh hi, fancy meeting you here.
As I work out the kinks in what to send, when it send it, and how to get it all organized, I'll be sending out emails like this every so often. A marginally more informal forum (how much more informal can I get? I hear you say) for thoughts and stuff that's still a little more underbaked than I'd like for the site. A little treat for subscribers that random visitors don't get to see until I polish it up.
Basically, this is the newsletter portion of the newsletter/blog hybrid I'm doing.
If you're reading this on the site, hi! These posts are for members only, and were originally email only before I realized I should have a means for new subscribers to read them.
I'll give you a sneak peak of the kinds of things you can find. Also so you can share this micro-review I'm proud of and want Kieron Gillen to see. If you have his email or follow him on Bluesky, please send this over.
I couldn't let this newsletter go out without throwing in at least one comics related section so here's my brief review of Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans and Clayton Cowles's We Called Them Giants. I have been sitting on this semi-spoilery take for MONTHS thanks to a generous review copy sent to the library I work at by Image comics.
We Called Them Giants is about many things. Finding hope in the end of the world. Survival. The crushing power of loneliness. But my main take-away is that I should be feeding my cats more often.
Yes, I will be brave enough to say it. We Called Them Giants is a beautiful sci-fi allegory that's really about what it's like to live as a house cat. I will hear no arguments and broker no disagreement. You can see your literary pretensions to the door, thank you very much. Make sure to give Lord Fluffington Jr. a good ear scritch on the way out.
